While buying a new home (or selling your old one) is a really exciting time, there’s also a less appealing aspect to it. Once you’ve closed the deal, you’re going to have to move.

Unfortunately, moving is one of the most stressful things you can do. With so much stuff to take care of – packing, organizing, transporting – the whole process can seem extremely daunting.

But, while moving is never going to be fun, there’s a lot you can do to make the process go as smoothly as possible.

Read on.

1. Get Your New Home Ready Beforehand
If at all possible, you should prepare your new home for moving day ahead of time.

No matter how prepared you are, moving is going to be stressful and tiring. And, after a long day of driving and lugging your stuff around, cleaning your new home is the last thing you’ll feel like doing.

At the very least, you should pre-clean your kitchen and your master bathroom. You should also buy some essentials ahead of time, such as toiletries and basic groceries. That way, you’ll be able to prepare a quick meal and have a shower as soon as you arrive.

Alternatively, consider packing a box with essentials. This will save you having to rummage around endless boxes to locate your pajamas, your toothbrush or a roll of toilet paper.

2. Make A Schedule… And Stick To It
Making a schedule and sticking to it is really key if you want your move to go as smoothly as possible.

Even if you’re a hardcore minimalist, you’d be surprised at just how much stuff seems to accumulate when you live in the same place for some time. It’s one of those unwritten laws of nature. A packing schedule keeps you organized and on track, which greatly reduces overwhelm and ensures you don’t forget anything behind.

It’s a good idea to start packing four to six weeks before your move, so you won’t be in a rush on d-day. As a plus, starting early gives you an opportunity to declutter, which brings us to our next point.

3. Seize The Opportunity Declutter
While you’ll want to take a lot of your stuff with you to your new home, you’ll probably come across several items you don’t use anymore.

Whether it’s clothes you no longer wear, the karate uniform from your martial arts phase or a broken VHS recorder, you’d be surprised at how much stuff you’ve stowed away and completely forgotten about. And most of it is just taking up space unnecessarily.

Moving is a great opportunity to get rid of all this stuff. Your new home will be less cluttered and you’ll gain storage space. You’ll also have less boxes to carry with you, which means you’ll be able to get a smaller moving truck. Oh, and your back will thank you, too.

4. Pack Strategically
Unless you pack your stuff carefully, moving can turn into a nightmare. Fragile items can get broken in transit. Clothing can be ruined. And don’t even get us started about setting up your TV and computer wiring as it was before the move.

Packing strategically will help you avoid a lot of aggravation.

Keep your clothes on their hangers and put them in garbage bags to keep the dust away. For best results, label the bags so you can quickly tell what’s what. You should also pack fragile items tightly and mark the boxes, so you’ll know to be careful when you carry them. Disposable plates are particularly great for packing your dinnerware, because they’re already plate-shaped. Just put some disposable plates in between your real plates to minimize shocks.

Also don’t forget to take pictures of all your wiring before your disconnect it. That way, setting it back up will be much easier.

5. Hire Professional Movers
Finally, understand you don’t have to move your stuff all by yourself.

If you’re moving somewhere in your current city, you can enlist friends and family to help you out.

Alternatively, if you’re moving far from your current location or simply have too much stuff to carry, consider hiring professional movers. This is an especially good idea if you have a lot of heavy furniture to transport. Professional movers not only have the right equipment, they’ll also know how to move it much more quickly and efficiently.
